Building the VR experience

Nowadays, when we talk about looking at a draft of our dream house or apartment, we mean examining the architectural sketch, concept, perspective plan, calculations of metric area, etc.

However, VR technology gives us something more. For example, it allows us to enter a building and stroll through the rooms; and at the same time, look through the windows and enjoy the beauty of the landscape. This total immersion of a VR visualization lets you genuinely see something that does not yet exist.

Thanks to VR, we get the opportunity to:

  • Show an object that still exists only as a project & visit it from a first-person perspective.

  • Optimize space for user experience & make changes to the 3D model at a relatively low cost.

  • Customize architectural details, colors and other elements. Similarly, there is also the possibility of changing weather conditions and testing their impact on the appearance of the object.

Challenge

Enhance investment with VR

The client wanted to develop a simulation (VR visualization) for one of their investment projects. They wanted it to consist of corridors, one shopping center floor, an underground car park and land development around the investment. Of course, we were required to make all of that possible to see and “visit” in virtual reality.

Scope

All you have to do is to put on your VR glasses, go through a tutorial and you are ready to see the VR visualization of planned investment. It was one of our first projects, at a time when powerful smartphones and new-generation devices were not yet available on the market, but the effect was very good. We managed to capture the essence of the project that the client presented us with.

Process

We wanted the client to be able to test the VR visualization app as soon as possible, which included basic functionalities and selected elements of the model. That is why we worked in two-week sprints, in the spirit of Scrum, delivering a tested increment at the end of each sprint. The client requested that the application be operated with Samsung Gear VR – they insisted that it should be portable and easy to transport. This, of course, influenced the quality of the graphics, which had to be adapted to the capabilities of the mobile device.

Collaboration

Our work was based on the investor’s plans and concepts. The things important to us were both technical documentation and the idea of creating a lifelike object. We wanted to leave a lasting impression on the potential customer. The client’s vision was very consistent which allowed us to achieve a satisfactory result.

Service

This is a model example of how to bridge the gap that has always existed between the project and the product. It was clear that the VR visualization should contain not only the building, with its size, space and remarkable design, but also the entire experience of visiting it. In the end, what we sell is feelings and dreams.

Technology stack

Unity of purpose

The application was made with Unity 3D for VR mobile devices, such as Samsung Gear VR.

For modeling, we used 3ds Max.
